What is an Angel Card Reading?

Do an internet search for Angel Oracle Cards…and you will be spoiled for choice. Because of their less occult image Angel cards can be preferred by some people who are suspicious of tarot. And there are many different decks out there to suit every taste.

What is an angel anyway?

What makes them different from tarot and different from each other? And while we are about it…what is an angel anyway? Angels are messengers or helpers of God in many world religions. The sacred tests of all Abrahamic faiths mention angels. They have their own hierarchy…Angels, Archangels, seraphim, cherubim… and there are many well known Angels and Archangels – Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, to name but a few with specific roles.

But there is a belief that they can relay messages to and from God better. So, onto the decks! Angel oracle cards are like every oracle/tarot deck…pieces of card with images on them. Of themselves they have NO power. The power comes from the intention with which they are used, and the intention of the decks creator. This is turn will reflect their beliefs about angels and about what specific angels are called on to do.

As a healer I love my ‘Archangel Raphael’ deck. Raphael is closely linked to healers and healing…so the images and legends on the cards reflect that. Angel decks, in general, reflect the philosophy of major world religions. There is a god, and we can ask that being for aid if we need it. The god they reflect is loving, compassionate, but realistic. Reassuringly, these decks in my experience (and I haven’t seen all of them!) do not reflect anything of the ethos of punishment for those who transgress. So if you are wary of religion, don’t let that put you off seeing what an Angel oracle reading can tell you.

What sort of readings can you get from an Angel deck?

Is there any specific sort of reading that Angel decks are better for? In my experience as a reader, if a message needs to be given to the person I am reading for it will come out in the cards WHATEVER deck is used. But using a deck with a focus that is in line with the needs of the person having the reading makes sense. It helps the message to come through more clearly. But also in my experience people who need support, and reassurance may well be drawn to choose an angel deck when they sit at the other side of table …or these days on the other side of my video feed! And just as the intention and beliefs or the creator of the deck shape the focus of the deck, so the needs of the person having the reading may guide them to the most appropriate deck for their needs. (That’s why I offer people a wide choice of decks ). If they are drawn to an Angel deck, it’s the best one for them.

So, if your issue is one which needs you to be strong…a deck focussed on Archangel Michael would be good. If its a situation that needs healing (of any sort) then Archangel Raphael is the one for you. (remembering we cannot answer specific questions on health of course) If you want guidance about the best way forward then a general deck like ‘Ask your Angels’ may be the best.

Angel decks are helpful when you feel you are in a situation that you feel needs some outside help and support, and maybe need some reassurance that you are not alone, that help is available. Because the whole premise of the decks are that messengers of an all powerful being are waiting to hear your concerns and provide the help you need. Also, that an all powerful being is around.

But don’t think an Angel oracle reading will hand you solutions on a plate. No oracle deck will ever do that. Angel oracle decks are really good for people who like to make a daily card pick for mediation or just get getting general guidance from the universe. The legends on Angel oracle cards are often clear and unambiguous. In many ways Angel oracle readings are just like other readings. But in my experience they work best for general broad issues rather than specific questions.

Common specific questions I have been asked during readings include ‘is my partner coming back?’ ‘Will I get the job?’ But for broader issues and general readings my experience tells me they are very powerful. But like all decks they will give you the answers you NEED…which may well be a sign that you are asking the wrong question and focussing on the wrong thing. Like all readings Angel card readings need to be approached with an open mind by the customer and the reader.
